The Halal Guys – 4929 Buford Hwy NE, Chamblee, GA 30341
I found myself in the Chamblee area today. If you’re from or familiar with Atlanta, you know Buford Highway is our corridor for all international cuisines. Anytime I find myself near/on the long road, I try to indulge in some sort of non-American dish.
So I thought…why not swing by the new Halal Guys location off Buford Highway?
Mediterranean food is one of my top 3 favorite cuisines (I eat it at least once a week!). Because of this, I can be critical of the Mediterranean restaurants I try, and we’ve got a surprising variety and abundance of Mediterranean/Greek options across the city. They range in quality and price from fast casual chain Zoës Kitchen to the upscale Kyma in Buckhead.
The Halal Guys establishment falls closer to a Zoës, actually maybe closer to a Poppin’ Pita (Midtown). It’s a chain hailing from the Big Apple that started off as a food stand. The one in Chamblee is Atlanta’s first opening, and it will be interesting to see how it survives in the city.
To be honest, I expected more. The opening of the Atlanta location came with hype & excitement, but my anticipation quickly died down while digging into my chicken platter. I wish they provided more fresh options, like a variety of grilled vegetables, and more traditional sauces, like Tahini or Tzatziki, to top your platter. The meat, plain yellow rice, shredded lettuce, and ranch-like white sauce just wasn’t enough.
HOWEVER, their pita was some of the best I’ve ever had! It was soft and paired perfect with their flavorful hummus. Perhaps trying their limited menu options with one of their pitas is the better choice.
Service: The staff was a DELIGHT! They were quick and fun.
**Not a location for brunch. A great location for lunch.
